MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE

A multimedia performance with live music and a visual backdrop, Songs that Sustain explores Appalachian song traditions primarily through the songs and stories of several women elders born in the 1920s who Susan learned from in western North Carolina.

Past venues include: Flood Gallery, Appalachian State University, Western Carolina University, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Museum, Oxford Library

Susan has done an outstanding job documenting this song tradition and these individuals who sustain and preserve it.
-Dr. Fred Hay, Appalachian State University

Her presentations of her study of these remarkable women and her beautiful performance of their songs—both sacred and secular—foreground the deep values and playful spirit of unaccompanied singing in the North Carolina Blue Ridge.
